Last week I received an invitation from MoveOn.org asking if I would host a Defend the Dream event on March 15 in tandem with the nationwide protests to show solidarity with the protests in Wisconsin and elsewhere. Spurred on by the great actions in Madison, I grabbed the opportunity to jump in with a "ReadIn" at Loussac Library, though it was only a few days from the date of the joint action. Sad to say, MoveOn.org didn't like my idea (no signs, singing and slogans) and after invites had gone out to people from my address book, I was informed that they would not be inviting local MoveOn members...I was on my own. Too late to cancel, too late to do my own publicity in any real sense of the word. Oh, well. So after a few misadventures at Kinko's where they are experiencing a nationwide failure of their computer systems, I finally arrived at the library, snazzy bookmarks in hand. Late, and singular in my protesting presence. If I had not run into a friend, it would have been a complete wash.
But, not to be deterred, I will be meeting with a local organizer in a few days and we are hoping to carry the original concept forward. She was out of town and unable to join in today. In the meantime, please keep reading on the recall efforts now in process in Wisconsin and the legislative processes in Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio to name a few. Please stay aware of how budget solutions are being applied to cuts that effect our best public resources and our public employees.
Keep the Lights ON in our libraries, in our schools, and for our public employees across the country. Keep informed, and stay involved.
See you next time. :)
